51·çÁ÷ Chorus to perform December 2

Hamilton, NY — The 51·çÁ÷ Chorus will perform their holiday concert on Sunday, December 2, under the direction of Daniel Toven, at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. The program, titled ‘Music for Brass & Choir,’ will feature Rutter’s Gloria and Gabrielli’s Jubilate Deo, performed in the round. The Gloria will be accompanied on organ by the chorus’s new accompanist, Chiharu Carpenter, as well as by a brass and percussion choir. The 51·çÁ÷ Women’s Ensemble will present three different settings of the Magnificat text, one by Dufay, one by Kodaly, and one by Cristine Pempel-Evans. The 51·çÁ÷ Chamber Singers will present an eclectic collection of pieces for a cappella mixed voices by Vitorius, Sweelinck, and Costeley. Toven recently completed his masters degree in orchestral conducting at the Eastman Conservatory of Music. As well as leading the 51·çÁ÷ Chorus and vocal ensembles this semester, he also serves as music director of the Plum Creek Chamber Orchestra in Pittsburgh, PA and as director of music and liturgy at St. Helen’s Church in Rochester. Toven is the former assistant conductor of the Mendelssohn Choir of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and taught high school choir for seven years in the Pittsburgh area before returning to Eastman for his masters degree.
