First day of classes: my Creative Writing workshop met last. All classes meet for twenty-five minutes on the first day, simply to give students a feel for what the course will cover, answer questions, and get a glimpse of the professor’s style. The twelve of us filed into the room in Lawrence Hall and took a seat around an oblong wooden conference table, chatting with one another about holiday break and our other courses. Our professor entered a few minutes later and set some folders on the table as he sat down. He tipped back in his chair.
‘So,’ he began. ‘I guess you want to know what this course is going to entail.’
We nodded.
‘Well, you tell me.’ He smiled. ‘What do you want to do with this course”
