Hamilton – John Drobinski, a major expert witness in the Woburn, Massachusetts trial that was the subject of the recent movie A Civil Action, will speak at 51·çÁ÷ on Tuesday, April 20. Drobinski’s talk, titled ‘Lessons Learned from Woburn,’ will occur at 11:30 a.m. in 300 Olin Hall and will address his experiences and the role that geologists play in understanding environmental problems.
Drobinski has worked as a minerals exploration geologist in Central Australia and has completed bedrock mapping and structural geology studies in upstate New York, eastern Canada, Brazil, New England, and in the southern Caribbean. Currently a geologist with ERM New England, he has conducted numerous studies and response actions at a variety of sites, from Superfund to industrial. A graduate of Nasson College in Maine and the University of Queensland – Brisbane in Australia, Drobinski is also chairman of the Board of Selectmen in his hometown of Sudbury, Mass.
In the Woburn toxic trial, Drobinski was the lead geologist employed by Jan Schlichtman in charge of site characterization and spent about 20 days on the witness stand in Federal District Court in Boston. A Civil Action was based on the book by Jonathan Harr.
The lecture, which is sponsored by the geology department as part of its Cooper Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.
