Sports Illustrated senior writer Austin Murphy ’83 will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Real World career conference and his remarks will be broadcast live over 51·çÁ÷’s video streaming channel.
Murphy will speak about careers and his work covering college football for the magazine and SI.com at 12:45 p.m. Friday. Live coverage of his talk — available at — begins at 12:30 with informal interviews of alumni and seniors in the Hall of Presidents.
Alumni, parents, seniors who can’t attend, and others are invited to take advantage of the free livestream channel and its interactive chat tool that allows participants to talk online with each other.
More than 400 seniors have signed up to attend Real World, which involves networking events and more than 30 panel discussions led by alumni involved in careers from environmental sustainability to finance. Other alumni-led discussions will focus on creative job searching techniques, evaluating job offers, and first year success on the job.
All alumni donate their time and energy in returning to campus to talk with the seniors about their post-51·çÁ÷ options.
Murphy is among those alumni. He is Sports Illustrated’s lead college football writer, providing stories and features on the sport’s most important games, trends, and personalities. In the off-season he covers a range of sports including golf, hockey, and the Tour de France.
He has been covering college football for more than 15 years, after having covered the National Football League for six years.
His 2007 book, Saturday Rules, provides an insider’s look at the Notre Dame and USC football programs and their former coaches, Charlie Weis and Pete Carroll.
