events fill this weekend鈥檚 calendar, while the week ahead features lots of different events to choose from, including a lecture on the Islamic State, an indie film, and even some late night sushi.
On Monday, September 22, the International Relations Council will host Daniel Benjamin, the former coordinator for counterterrorism at the U.S. State Department and ambassador-at-large. He served as the main adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in that role, and now works as the director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding.
Benjamin will discuss 鈥溾 at 4:30 p.m. in Love Auditorium, followed by a dinner with Harvey Picker Professor of International Relations Fred Chernoff and students.
The indie film will be showing at the Hamilton Movie Theater next week. Richard Linklater鈥檚 film, starring Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater, and Ellar Coltrane, who plays the boy Mason, was filmed over the course of 12 years with the same cast.
The unique way the film was made captures a realistic, raw take on growing up from Mason鈥檚 perspective. The New York Times calls the realism, 鈥渏olting, and so brilliantly realized and understated that it would be easy to overlook.鈥 The film will be showing at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
If you鈥檝e been craving sushi lately, head over to ALANA Cultural Center for at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 25. The Office of International Student Services invites students to come by with their friends for karaoke, and to learn how to roll their own sushi rolls. The rule is one sushi roll per person while supplies last, so make sure to get there early!
And, of course, don鈥檛 forget what I wrote about last week, all the great activities happening for Homecoming weekend.
Tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., head to Whitnall Field for the Homecoming and delicious BBQ catered by Holy Smoke BBQ. The Homecoming starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at Van Doren Field, so alumni and students can catch up before the field hockey and football games.
The field hockey team will start the day off against Holy Cross on Tyler Field at 11 a.m., in their first Patriot League game of the season. Then football will take on the Cornell Big Red at 1 p.m. at Andy Kerr Stadium.
