SCHENECTADY, N.Y. ‘ For the second straight game, the 51·çÁ÷ men’s lacrosse team held its opponent scoreless in the first half as the Raiders defeated Holy Cross, 15-3, in its final conference game of the season. With the win, the Raiders reached a milestone, registering their first ever 4-win conference season as their Patriot League record improved to 4-2.
51·çÁ÷ (7-6, 4-2) scored nine goals from eight players in the first half to take a 9-0 advantage into the break. Junior Jeff Vander Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) tallied two goals during the run; the first was assisted by senior Peter Watts (Wayland, Mass.) while the second was assisted by senior Scott Herbst (Short Hills, N.J.).
Freshman Mark Nemith (Albany, N.Y.) began the scoring for the Raiders off a pass from sophomore Jason Vasas (Fairport, N.Y.) at the 8:56 mark of the first period. Herbst and Vasas each scored once with Vasas’s tally coming from Vander Meulen.
Sophomore Eddie Brennan (Hillsborough, Calif) began the scoring in the second period off a pass from sophomore Matt Saxon (Bethesda, Md.) at the 12:51 mark. Freshman Robert Trasolini (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal while junior Chris Michaels (Pennington, N.J.) and Watts each scored off a pass from Herbst.
The Raiders continued to hold the Crusaders scoreless in the third as Herbst, Michaels, freshman Reid Diamond (Brookline, Mass) and junior Jonathan Pico (Denver, Colo.) scored unassisted goals. Senior Nick Gerken (Wilton, Conn.) took a pass from Trasolini to score his lone goal of the game with 8:18 left in the third period.
Holy Cross (3-9, 1-5) began the fourth period with back-to-back goals as Paul Washington scored at the 9:38 mark and then assisted on Mark Tarnuzzer’s goal with 6:07 remaining. Sophomore Brad Benson (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored the Raiders’ final goal at the 5:21 mark before Washington scored off a pass from Tarnuzzer with 3:41 left in the game.
Junior Greg Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) led the Raiders with five ground balls while junior Ramsey Brame (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up four.
Freshman Andrew Jarolimek (Silverthorne, Colo.) made five saves in the cage in 47:30 minutes of play before freshman Kyle Stuart (Annandale, Va.) gave up three goals while registering two saves.
The Raiders dominated in every category, taking 33 shots to Holy Cross’ 20; scooping 31 ground balls to the Crusaders’ 22 and winning 17 of 22 face offs.
51·çÁ÷ returns home to face Binghamton in a non-conference game on Saturday, April 26 on Tyler’s Field at 1:00 p.m.
