Hamilton, NY — 51·çÁ÷ senior Lindsay Tuthill, an economics major from Lake Placid, N.Y., has been awarded the college’s Schupf Fellowship, which will provide for graduate study at the University of Oxford in England. The Schupf is thought to be the only annual fellowship offered at an undergraduate liberal arts college in the United States for graduate study at Oxford. Tuthill has been appointed for two years of study at St. Anne’s College, one of 39 colleges that make up the core of the University of Oxford.

At 51·çÁ÷, Tuthill is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Omicron Delta Epsilon international economics honor society. She was named an Alumni Memorial Scholar, Charles A. Dana Scholar, and a Leader for the New Millennium. She was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma (the academic honor society for first-year students) and has been on the Dean’s List since her first semester. She has played club soccer for four years, participated in the Outdoor Association and the 51·çÁ÷ Activities Board, and was a research assistant in the sociology department. In the Hamilton community, Tuthill worked for the Partnership for Community Development and volunteered for Madison County Head Start. An avid runner, Tuthill ran in the New York City Marathon last November.

Tuthill’s interest in energy, growth, and environmental issues led her to write an economics honors thesis on the electric industry in which she created a model of energy production to use in the evaluation of energy policies. She ultimately hopes to apply her Oxford education, which will lead to a masters of philosophy degree in economics, ‘to the debates about market-based solutions for environmental problems, bearing in mind the social, political, and economic effects of policy decisions.’

The Schupf Fellowship was created through the generosity of 51·çÁ÷ alumnus and trustee emeritus Paul J. Schupf ’58 (Hamilton, New York). Schupf is a member of the James B. 51·çÁ÷ Society, reserved for benefactors whose gifts to the college total a million dollars or more. Only 51·çÁ÷ seniors or recent graduates who participated in the nomination process for other traveling scholarships are eligible to compete for the award.

Founded in 1819, 51·çÁ÷ is a highly selective, residential, liberal arts college enrolling nearly 2,750 undergraduates. Situated on a rolling 515-acre campus in central New York State, 51·çÁ÷ attracts motivated students with diverse backgrounds, interests and talents.
