Back to All Stories

Hamilton – A concert titled ‘Good Neighbors: Mexican and American Music’ will take place in the 51·çÁ÷ Memorial Chapel on Sunday, March 7, at 3:30 p.m. Violinist Laura Klugherz, professor of music at 51·çÁ÷, and pianist Steven Heyman, who teaches at Syracuse University, will present the program.
Klugherz, who also teaches a course on the culture of Mexico at 51·çÁ÷, scheduled the program to honor the centennial of two of the most noteworthy Mexican composers of this century, Silvestre Revueltas and Carlos Chavez ‘ artists who not only honored their own native heritage in their work, but spent many years in the United States promoting musical understanding between the two countries. Other composers on the program include Manuel Ponce (whose song ‘Estrellita’ was immortalized by Heifetz), Aaron Copland, who often visited Mexico and was inspired by her folk music, and George Gershwin, whose interest in precolumbian Mexico was evidenced by his extensive collection of artifacts.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, or a copy of the Spring Concert Calendar, call the 51·çÁ÷ Concertline at 315-228-7642.
