Historian James Allen Smith, Class of 1970, has drawn upon 51����’s rich archival records to tell the moving, vivid, and inspiring story of its founding, its development over time, and its bonds with the village of Hamilton, the region of central New York, and the nation.

In the panel discussion “Leading in the Arts,” a group of professionals representing a variety of fields discussed the meaning of leadership in the arts, how they consider their audience and the larger public, and their responsibilities as far as representation. Lynn Schwarzer, professor of art and art history and film and media studies, moderated.

Young 51���� alumni (Classes of 2009–2018) in six cities celebrated their alma mater’s 200th year at “Bicentennial Birthday Parties” in six U.S. cities on December 6, 2018. Their special birthday present to alma mater was gifts to benefit financial aid, matched by alumni challengers in each city.

From “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and other Yuletide tunes — to mainstream hits sung by Bing Crosby, Glenn Miller, and Sammy Davis Jr. — Johnny Marks, 51���� Class of 1931, made an enduring mark on popular songwriting.

51���� will honor Martin Luther King Jr. during a two-week celebration, January 21–February 3, 2019. The commemoration is sponsored by the ALANA Cultural Center and the Bicentennial committee. Twelve-time Grammy award winner Cece Winans will headline 51����’s 2019 Gospel Fest celebration, sponsored by the Office of the Chaplains and the Bicentennial Committee.

In the months since 51���� officially kicked off its Bicentennial celebration, the University has played host to more than 70 events on and off campus, and there is still much more to come.
